FEATURED POETRY: Adam by Jaja dela Peña

Adam was a sinner
he was human and weak
he couldn’t resist the temptation
of finding everything he seeked

who could resist the sensation?
the feeling of euphoria and lust
she was the reddest apple in the garden
she had the beauty you couldn’t trust

but Adam was a sinner
he couldn’t say no
what harm she intended to bring
her evil didn’t show

he took a bite of the exquisite fruit
a bite he never should have taken
at first she tasted sweet then became bitter
and so it came; the downfall of the sinner

despite the delightful taste of the red apple
the pleasure of the bite did not last
a great pain in his chest
suddenly a spell has been cast

the apple was poisoned
she was never meant to satisfy
she was meant to kill
now he was struggling to get by

no means of survival
no means of cure
what seemed so beautiful to him
was never created pure

but Adam was a sinner
he was young and naive
he gave in to what he thought was good
and now look where he stood

FEATURED POETRY: A Riddle by Carla Caronongan

I make your heart skip a beat.
I make your cheeks blushing red.

All the love songs will make sense.
As well as the fairytales you read.

But I can tear your heart into pieces.
And be the reason for your bloodshot eyes.

You'll curse the radio and tear the pages.
Because I am why your songs turn into cries.

Who am I?

Save me
Your love won't
Be put to waste
Your promises will
Keep my heart beating
Nothing you say can
Make me hate you
Your eyes, your smile
You make me whole
What made them think
I can't be saved

A message from the founders

Happy second anniversary to us!

Thank you for continuing to believe in Young Writers Philippines, for sending in your works to share with the world, and simply for writing. It makes me happy to see so many of you keeping that writing dream alive. I am glad that you've taken the challenge even though the writing life is harsh. Please continue to write and submit to YWPH because sharing your works makes us truly pleased with what we do.

We hope to make YWPH even better as the years go by, may it be with workshops (crossing our fingers!) or meetups (crossing our fingers again!). But until that happens, we can only ask one thing from all of you: write.

And remember, as long as you write, you are a member of the YWPH family.

Write on, writers.

Kat

YWPH, you're already two. After many baby steps along the way, you're learning the ropes and continuing to develop just as any toddler does. That's thanks to you guys. This community has been all about being by writers for writers, and so we learn together about this little craft we've learned to love as YWPH becomes a big kid.

While you're on that journey, don't forget why you started in the first place. Have fun.
